Women's Lacrosse Notches Win in Season Opener

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team held on to win its season opener, 13-12 over Curry in Commonwealth Coast Conference play at Sweeney Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The teams played nearly eight minutes of scoreless lacrosse but the teams combined for three goals in less than one minute. Sharon Doherty and Katie Parker combined for a pair of Curry goals while sophomore Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine) got the Leopards on the board.
  • The offensive output would pick up in the final 13 minutes of the half. Curry's Sabrina Santaniello found the back of the goal to extend the lead to 3-1. Hamblett responded with her second of the contest and freshman Olivia Murray (Quincy, Mass.) got the equalizer with her first collegiate marker with 5:31 remaining in the half.
  • Katie Tarr gave the Colonels the lead back just 37 seconds later but that was matched by freshman Jenna Viglione (Burlington, Mass.). Viglione scooped a ground ball and drove towards the goal to tally her first career goal.
  • Curry would regain the lead late in the half as Ellie Hardman earned a ground ball from behind the cage and drove around the left side of the cage to take a 5-4 lead. Junior Jorgie Pashalian (Cranston, R.I.) tied the contest one minute later after her shot beat Jessica Ginaitt. The teams headed to the break deadlocked at five.
  • Wentworth quickly grabbed its first lead of the day as junior Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.) scored just 2:06 into the second half. However, Parker quickly tied the score 34 seconds later. Pashalian regained the Leopard lead with a strong drive to the cage for her second goal of the day. In under one minute, Curry tied the contest on a Taylor Gallagher goal.
  • After a strong defensive stand by the Colonels, Doherty found an opening the Leopard defense and tallied her second goal on the day with 22:27 remaining in the half, which made the score 8-7. However, the Leopards utilized a timeout and capitalized with a pair of goals from junior Bella MacMahon (North Yarmouth, Maine), giving the hosts a 9-8 lead with 21:10 remaining in the second half.
  • A free-position shot by Parker tied the score with 15:30 remaining before Galan regained the Leopard lead three minutes later. Hamblett and MacMahon tallied their third goals of the contest just 25 seconds apart to give Wentworth the largest lead of the day at 12-9.
  • Parker and Galan traded goals under 10 minutes to play, to make the score 13-10.
  • Curry closed the gap to one in the final minutes as Parker and Chloe Chevrier went back to back to make the score 13-12.

NOTES

  • Wentworth outshot the Colonels 41-29 overall with 30 shots going on goal compared to 19 for Curry.
  • Wentworth held a slight advantage in draw controls, 14-13, and held an advantage in clears 24-22.

THE SERIES

  • This is the eighth meeting all-time between the two schools. The Leopards are now 2-6 all-time against the Colonels.

NEXT UP

  • Wentworth returns to action on Wednesday (March 31) when they travel to Salve Regina. They are scheduled to start at 7:00 pm.
