Salve Regina Breaks Away from Women's Lacrosse

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The Salve Regina University women's lacrosse team broke open a close game by scoring the final five tallies of the contest as the Seahawks defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 14-8, Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Salve Regina senior Kaity Doherty (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Wentworth junior Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.) scored 14 seconds apart early in the first half which was one of four tie scores. The Seahawks got goals from three different players to take a 4-1 lead with 16:36 remaining in the half. Galan, junior Bella MacMahon (North Yarmouth, Maine), and sophomore Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine) provided Wentworth with a 3-0 run to even the score at 4-all.
  • The teams traded goals throughout the remainder of the half with Salve Regina senior Meghan Ryder (Wantagh, N.Y.) scoring with 2:45 left in the frame to give the hosts a 7-6 lead. Ryder's goal was the first of three straight for the hosts who took a 9-6 lead with 25:34 left in the contest.
  • Galan recorded a pair of goals in a span of 21 seconds to pull Wentworth back within one with 21:39 left. However, that would be as close as the Leopards would get as Salve Regina scored the next five goals to take the win.
  • Galan finished with a game-high six goals while Hamblett won a career-high eight draws.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Tonight marked the eighth all-time meeting between the two programs with Salve Regina holding an 8-0 series lead.
