Fast Start Lifts Western New England Past Women's Lacrosse

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wentworth women's lacrosse team fell to Western New England University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday afternoon, 22-9.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • WNE opened the scoring just 40 seconds in on a goal by Hannah Jarvis. However, the Leopards responded with a goal by junior Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.) with 24:56 remaining in the opening half.
  • Liz Mazza and Jarvis gave the Golden Bears a 3-1 edge with 21:14 left in the first half. Graduate student Marissa Nelson (Cranston, R.I.) got the scoring back in Wentworth's favor just 21 seconds later.
  • However, WNE tallied the next six goals over a 10-minute span to hold a 9-2 lead. Mazza, Jarvis, Emmy Burns, and Kylie Buchanan combined for the goals. Freshman Olivia Murray (Quincy, Mass.) and Galan recorded a pair of Leopard goals, just over one minute apart from each other.
  • The Golden Bears went on another scoring run as Ally Ferraro and Anabella Arias combined for three more tallies in less than one minute and gave the hosts a 12-4 lead.
  • Junior Jorgie Pashalian got the Leopards back on the board but two Golden Bear goals late in the half gave them a 14-5 lead at the break.
  • Murray opened the second half with her second goal of the game as the teams traded goals early in the second half. Jarvis, Galan, and Arias all found the cage for their respective teams as the score found its way to 16-7.
  • Buchanan and Samantha Vitka broke the trend of trading goals and the Golden Bears had tallied three straight goals. However, sophomore Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine) cut into the lead with 14:04 remaining in the second half and the teams traded a pair of goals as Jarvis and Galan tallied goals just 1:23 apart which made the score 19-9.
  • Buchanan tallied back-to-back goals to build the WNE lead to 21-9 with 7:34 left to play. Reilly Miller added another goal late to give the Golden Bears a 22-9 lead.

THE SERIES

  • This is the eighth meeting all-time between the two schools. The Leopards are 0-8 against the Golden Bears.

  • Wentworth returns to action on Thursday (April 8) to host Gordon College. The start time is scheduled for 7 pm.
