BOSTON, Mass. –Sophomore Alex Potts (Niverville, N.Y.) recorded 13 kills, three blocks, and hit .667, as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team opened Great Northeast Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 win over Albertus Magnus.
With the win the Leopards improve to 5-1 on the season while the Falcons fall to 1-2 (0-1).
After Albertus Magnus opened the first set with three points, Wentworth responded with five straight, including a pair of kills from freshman Sean Mullen (Longwood, Fla.) to lead 5-3. The Falcons capitalized on Leopard errors to take the 7-6 lead, but Potts had four kills and a service ace in the first to help give the Black and Gold the first set, 25-18.
Both teams were in it during the second set, as the teams were tied at 14-all. Potts once again recorded four kills in the set, and sophomore Jake Reed (Arvada, Colo.) added a pair. Sophomore Mike Hansen's (Rochester, N.Y.) three service aces helped lift Wentworth to the 25-17 second set victory.
Reed continued on the offensive for Wentworth, as he had six kills in the final set, including back to back kills to put the Leopards up 20-13. Sophomore Paul Cooke (Ridgefield, Conn.) had back to back service aces to make the score 23-14 for Wentworth, as the Leopards would go on to win 25-16 and take the match.
In addition to Potts'13 kills, Reed had 10 kills and a pair of blocks, Hansen had four aces, and sophomore Collin Ritter (Feeding Hills, Mass.) had 32 assists and two blocks.
