BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Claire Reif (Winter Springs, Fla.) turned aside a career-high 12 saves, however a goal in the 85th minute lifted the Western New England women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Reif was tested early, turning aside a pair of shots in a five-minute span before Wentworth senior Lauren Bradley (Lumberton, N.J.) gave the Leopards their first scoring chance in the 11th minute.
  • Western New England had perhaps its best chance to score in the 25th minute as senior Isabella Montalvo (Rocky Hill, Conn.) took a shot that was saved by Reif. The rebound came back to Montalvo, who had another point-blank attempt that was turned aside by Reif.
  • Junior Jenny Montville (Plainville, Mass.) had a shot on net in the 30th minute, however, senior Molly McLaughlin (Guilford, Conn.) came up with the save to keep the game scoreless.
  • The Golden Bears came out firing in the second half, taking five shots in the first 11 minutes, however, only two went on target that were saved by Reif. In the 58th minute, Bradly had another bid that was stopped by McLaughlin.
  • Wentworth had a pair of shot attempts in the 65th and 66th minutes go wide before Reif made another save in the 70th minute. In the 83rd minute, senior Madelyn Seder (Marlborough, Mass.) attempted to break the ice for the Black & Gold, however, McLaughlin came up with the save.
  • At the 84:35 mark, Western New England was awarded a corner kick. Senior Julia Frappier (Granby, Mass.) sent the ball towards the box, where, in an attempt to clear it out, a Wentworth player misplayed the header and the ball went into the net.
  • Eight of Reif's 12 saves came in the first half, while McLaughlin finished with four saves. The Golden Bears had a 21-9 shot advantage and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
