BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Emily Hagen (Ellicott City, Md.) scored the game's lone goal and freshman Claire Reif (Winter Springs, Fla.) earned his first collegiate solo shutout as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team (2-6-1) edged Rhode Island College (7-3-2), 1-0, in non-conference action Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Neither team was able to generate scoring chances early as there were no shot attempts through the first 11-plus minutes. However, Wentworth capitalized on its first scoring chance when Hagen caused a turnover 25 yards out. After collecting the ball from the Rhode Island College defender, she fired a shot to the center of the net, over freshman keeper Nicole Nunes (Smithfield, R.I.) head.
- In the 31st minute, the Leopards had a chance to take a 2-0 lead off a corner kick play, however, Hagen's shot went wide of the net. Just 31 seconds apart, the Anchorwomen had a pair of chances, but the first attempt was blocked and the second attempt was saved by Reif.
- Rhode Island College nearly tied the game with a pair of shots in the 59th and 60th minutes. Freshman Amber Almeida (Sturbridge, Mass.) took a shot that was saved by Reif. After the rebound came back to Almeida, she fired another shot on net, which Reif came up with he save on.
- The Anchorwomen had a pair of corner kicks 42 seconds apart late in the contest, with the second one leading to a header that sailed high of the mark. Reif made a stop in the 88th minute and the Black & Gold held off a late RIC charge for the win.
- Reif made three of her four saves in the second half. Rhode Island College had an 11-6 shot advantage and a 4-2 edge on corner kicks.
