Baseball Splits With WPI

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Wentworth baseball team traded walk-off wins with WPI on Sunday afternoon as the Leopards rallied to take the first game, 3-2, before the Engineers used a rally of their own in the nightcap for a 4-3 win.

In the first game Wentworth held a 1-0 lead before WPI would tie the game at 1-all in the sixth and take a 2-1 lead into the last of the seventh inning. A pair of Wentworth singles by sophomore Paul Dassau (Franklin, Mass.) and freshman Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.) and a fielder's choice that resulted in a fielding error loaded the bases. An infield single by sophomore Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.) scored Dassau and senior Conner Flisnik provided the game-winning RBI when he was hit by a pitch.

Junior Alex Wong (Lewiston, Maine) pitched six innings, allowing one run on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts and went 1-for-4 at the plate. Freshman Justin Voytek (New Milford, Conn.) picked up his first collegiate win, allowing one run, walking one, and striking out one in the seventh inning. At the plate Spitz was 3-for-4 with an RBI to pace the offense.

Thanks in part to eight WPI errors Wentworth built a 3-0 lead after five innings and lead 3-1 going into the seventh. However, the Engineers' rally was capped off by a two-run single with two outs in the last of the seventh.

Wong and Spitz each had four hits, with Spitz driving in another run. Freshman Dakota Baird (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) suffered the loss, going 6.1 innings and allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out 10 batters. Six of his 10 strikeouts were consecutive from the fourth through sixth innings.
