Three Baseball Players Earn All-CCC Honors

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Student-athletes from all nine institutions that sponsor baseball in the Commonwealth Coast Conference were represented on the 2012 All-CCC Baseball Team as announced today by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye. In addition to the all-conference team, winners of five major individual awards and the team sportsmanship award were also selected.

The Wentworth baseball team was represented by three student-athletes who earned four all-conference accolades. Junior Alex Wong (Lewiston, Maine) was recognized for his work as both an outfielder and a pitcher, earning First and Second Team All-CCC Honors, respectively, while freshman catcher Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) and sophomore second baseman Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.) were each honorable mention all-conference selections.

Wong enjoyed a stellar season and was a two-way threat for the Leopards. He started all 35 games in which he played and led the team in every offensive category as he batted .367 (44-for-120) with nine doubles, five triples, a home run, 36 runs scored, 18 stolen bases, and 25 RBI and also had an on-base percentage of .452 and a slugging percentage of .550. He had 15 multiple-hit games, including when he went 6-for-9 in a doubleheader sweep of SUNYIT in Lakeland, Florida.

On the hill he made 10 appearances (eight starts), posting a 2-5 record with a 2.44 earned run average. In seven of his eight starts he went the distance; including posting a three-hit shutout in an 8-0 win over RIT in Avon Park, Florida. Wong pitched 55.1 innings and held opponents to a .215 batting average while walking 16 and striking out 35.

In his three seasons with the leopards, Wong has started 88 of the 91 games in which he has played and has a career batting average of .326 (79-for-242) with 15 doubles, seven triples, a home run, 73 runs scored, and 50 runs batted in. Eighteen of the 91 games he has appeared in has been as a pitcher (16 starts) where he has a 5-7 record with a 3.29 earned run average. In 104 career innings he has held batters to a .238 average, while walking 34 and striking out 72.

Mailman started 30 of the 32 games in which he played with 20 of his starts coming at catcher and 10 coming as the designated hitter. He hit .274 (26-for-95) with six doubles, a triple, 15 runs scored, and 20 RBI. His six doubles ranked second on the team while his 20 RBI ranked him second among his teammates. In a 9-5 win at Mass. Maritime, Mailman rapped out four hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs.

Starting all 36 of Wentworth's games (34 at shortstop, two at second base), Spitz batted .323 (40-for-124) with five doubles, 17 stolen bases, 21 runs scored, and 16 RBI. Spitz also led the team with 17 walks and had an on-base percentage of .421. Recording multiple hits in 10 games, Spitz equaled his career high with three hits on four occasions.

Over his first two seasons, Spitz has started 60 of the 66 games in which he has played, batting .322 (67-for-208) with nine doubles, one triple, 23 stolen bases, 40 runs scored, and 26 RBI.

Under the direction of eighth-year head coach Steve Studley, the Leopards finished the 2012 season with a 15-21 record and tied for sixth in CCC play with a 6-10 mark.
