Baseball Comes up Short at Lasell

WALTHAM, Mass. – Four different players recorded two hits as a part of a 13-hit output as the Lasell College baseball team won its third straight game with a 9-6 triumph over Wentworth at Brandeis University's Stein Diamond.

Wentworth took a 2-0 lead in its first at bat as junior Alex Wong (Lewiston, Maine) led off with a double and scored on a RBI single from sophomore Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.). Spitz would come home when senior Conner Flisnik (Marcy, N.Y.) delivered a sacrifice fly to center.

The Lasers cut the Leopards' lead in half in the home half of the inning on an RBI single from senior Conor Cavanagh (Quincy, Mass.), which plated classmate Matt Mahoney (Rockland, Mass.). Lasell would tie the game in the third inning when Mahoney was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored on a double off the bat of sophomore Billy Uberti (Newton, Mass.).

Lasell took advantage of three Wentworth errors in the fourth inning, scoring three times to make it a 5-2 game. Mahoney reached on an error that plated a run while Uberti reached on an error that scored a pair of runs.

Wentworth got two runs back in the top of the fifth when Flisnik hit a two-run single, scoring Wong and freshman Anthony Matera (Trumbull, Conn.), but would surrender three more runs in the home half of the inning as freshman Matt Sammarco (New Canaan, Conn.), senior Josh Sullivan (Rockland, Mass.), and Mahoney each had RBI singles.

The game remained 8-4 in favor of Lasell until the seventh inning when Flisnik singled home Wong, who was hit by a pitch with two outs, and Spitz scored when senior Justin Bolla (Groveland, Mass.) reached on an error.

Lasell added an insurance run in the home half of the eighth junior Jacob Salkovitz (Brockton, Mass.) scored on an error after a sophomore Corey Michel (Rochester, N.H.) single.

Mahoney, Uberti, Cavanagh, and Mitchell each had 2-for-4 evenings, with Mahoney scoring three times and Salkovitz scoring twice. Freshman Matti Doxter (Somersworth, N.H.) notched his first collegiate win (1-1) as he allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out five. Junior Chris Pittman (Brockton, Mass.) allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits in three innings and Sullivan picked up his first save of the season after striking out two in the ninth inning.

Flisnik was 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Wong and Spitz had two hits apiece for the Leopards. Wong scored three times and Spitz came around to score twice. Sophomore Ben Lewis (Middletown, R.I.) was tagged with the loss (2-2), allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits, walking two, and striking out three in four innings. Senior Nick Colanto (Beverly, Mass.) allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked two, and struck out three over the final four innings.

With the win Lasell improves to 10-14 and is at Suffolk for a doubleheader on Saturday. Wentworth dropped its third straight to stand at 13-12. The Leopards are idle until April 12 when they travel to Mass. Maritime.
