Baseball Walks Off With Win

AUBURNDALE, Florida – Junior Alex Wong's (Lewiston, Maine) two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth capped off a five-run rally over the final two innings as the Wentworth baseball team defeated Colby-Sawyer, 6-5, at Lake Myrtle Sports Park.

The Leopards, who received a complete-game win from sophomore Ben Lewis (Middletown, R.I.), scored in the bottom of the first inning as Wong led off getting hit by a pitch and stole second. He would come around to score on senior Conner Flisnik's (Marcy, N.Y.) RBI single two batters later.

Lewis set the first 11 batters he faced down and his counterpart, Charger junior Jordie Scheiner (Redding, Conn.) went the second through seventh innings setting down 15 batters in a row.

Colby-Sawyer threatened in the sixth inning by loading the bases with one out, but Lewis got a double play to end the threat. However, an inning later the Chargers would take advantage of two Leopard errors and take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Jon Wylie (Middleboro, Mass.) walked and would score after classmate Andy Lapple (Newtown, Conn.) singled and advanced to third on an error and a relay throw. He would come home a batter later when senior Justin Martin (Lebanon, N.H.) reached on an error.

The Chargers increased their lead to 5-1 in the eighth inning as Lapple had an RBI single and Martin added a two-run single.

Wentworth began its comeback in the home half of the eighth inning when freshman Dakota Baird (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) led off with a single and went to second on a groundout. Sophomore Paul Dassau (Franklin, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and Wong loaded the bases with a single to left. A sophomore Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.) single to center drove in Baird to cut the lead to 5-2 and freshman Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) pulled the Leopards to within one on a two-out single to center.

After the Chargers went down in order in the top of the ninth, freshman Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.) led off with a walk and went to second when Baird laid a bunt down the first base line that stopped right on the chalk. Freshman Scott Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) moved both players up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt and Hulme tied the game on a Dassau groundout. Wong provided the heroics when he delivered a single to right that scored Baird.

Lewis (1-0) scattered six hits and struck out five without giving up an earned run as the Leopards made six errors on the afternoon. Offensively Baird was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Wong was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Mailman drove in two runs in his only at bat of the game.

Senior Greg Doucette (Ipswich, Mass.) took the loss for the Chargers, falling to 1-1. In 1.1 innings of relief he allowed two runs on three hits. Scheiner went the first 7.1, allowing four runs on seven hits. Offensively Lapple and sophomore Kyle Greenwood (Lyndonville, Vt.) had two hits apiece while Martin drove in a pair of runs.

With the win Wentworth improves to 4-3 on the season and faces SUNYIT in a doubleheader tomorrow in Lakeland. Colby-Sawyer falls to 4-2 and plays Clark in a doubleheader tomorrow.
