Baseball Runs Win Streak to Five

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Senior Conner Flisnik (Marcy, N.Y.), junior Alex Wong (Lewiston, Maine), and freshman Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.) combined to go 12-for-18 with seven runs scored and 11 RBI to help the Wentworth baseball team run its win streak to five games with a sweep of Roger Williams in Commonwealth Coast Conference action. Additionally, Wong picked up the win with a complete-game effort in the Leopards' 5-4 win in the first game before the Black & Gold scored 12 times in the fourth and fifth innings of game two in a 13-2 win.

Wentworth jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener as Wong led off with a walked and advanced to second on a throwing error. Flisnik moved Wong and sophomore Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.) each up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt and Wong would score on an errant throw home as senior Justin Bolla (Groveland, mass.) reached on a fielder's choice.

The Hawks took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when sophomore Eric Bransfield (Lynn, Mass.) delivered an RBI single that plated senior Trevor Manzi (Beverly, Mass.) and senior Chris Comeau (Southbury, Conn.) delivered a sacrifice fly that scored junior John Oppenheimer (Westport, Conn.). Roger Williams added to its lead in the fourth on an RBi single from Manzi, which scored sophomore Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.).

Wentworth took the lead with a four-run bottom of the inning as sophomore Dakota Baird (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) led drew a one-out walk and came home on a Hulme triple. Junior Ryan Delgado (Wareham, Mass.) singled in Hulme and Spitz delivered a two-run singles, scoring Delgado and Wong.

Roger Williams cut the lead to 5-4 with a run in the sixth inning when freshman Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) tripled and scored when junior Matt Swensen (Charlton, Mass.) reached on a two-base error. Swensen went to third on a passed ball, but was stranded there to end the inning.

Wong improved to 2-1 after allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out six batters in the win. He helped his cause by going 2-for-2 with two runs scored at the plate. Hulme was 2-for-3 and Spitz drove in two runs.

Freshman Brendan Telfer (Avon, Conn.) took the loss (1-2), allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and striking out four in five innings of work. Junior Josh Orosz (Fairfield, Conn.) allowed just one hit and struck out four over the final two innings. Pascarella had two of the Hawks seven hits.

Game two saw the teams trade runs in the first inning as Pascarella led off with a double, moved to third on a flyout and scored when Oppenheimer delivered a sacrifice fly. Wentworth evened the score when Wong was hit by a pitch and stole second and third before coming in to score on a Flisnik single.

The game remained tied until the fourth inning when the Hawks took a 2-1 lead on a freshman Joe Hock (Braintree, Mass.) sacrifice fly, which scored Bransfield, who had singled, stole second, and moved to third on a Comeau single.

Wentworth took the lead for good in the home half of the inning, scoring six times to make it a 7-2 game. Wong and Hulme each had two-run singles, while Spitz and Flisnik each drove in a run. The Leopards broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning, as Flisnik had a two-run single, Wong had an RBI single, Hulme hit a sacrifice fly, and freshman Scott Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) and senior Kevin McKenzie (Arlington, Mass.) each had RBI singles.

Baird picked up his first collegiate win (1-2) with six strong innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Junior Ryan Conrad (East Bridgewater, Mass.) set the side down in order on five pitches in the seventh. At the plate, Flisnik was 3-for-5 with four RBI, Wong went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI, and Hulme and McKenzie each had two hits. Hulme also drove in two runs.

Sophomore Dan Julian (Stratford, Conn.) took the loss (0-3), allowing seven runs on six hits and striking out five in 3.2 innings of work. Pascarella had two of the Hawks' four hits.

With the wins Wentworth improves to 12-8 overall and 4-0 in CCC play. The Leopards host Salve Regina on Saturday, March 31. Roger Williams falls to 3-12 (0-2) and is at Endicott tomorrow.
