Baseball Swept at Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – Junior Brian Hamilton (Shoreham, N.Y.) picked up relief wins in both games as the Gordon College baseball team swept Wentworth, 1-0 (eight innings) and 4-2, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Game one was a pitcher's duel between Fighting Scots' sophomore Ryan Reinsel (Hudson, Ohio) and Leopard junior Alex Wong (Lewiston, Maine). Gordon had its first chance to break the deadlock in the third inning, thanks to a pair of one-out walks. However, Wong retired the next two batters to end the threat.

Two innings later the Leopards threatened as senior Justin Bolla (Groveland, Mass.) hit a one-out double – Wentworth's lone hit in the game – and went to third on a groundout. Junior Ryan Delgado (Wareham, Mass.) walked and stole second, but Reinsel induced a groundout to end the inning. Gordon had a pair of runners on in the sixth – thanks to a Wentworth error and a walk with two outs – but Wong got a strikeout to end the inning.

Junior Ben Davidson (Sterling, Mass.) led off the eighth inning with a single and was erased when sophomore Stephen Crawford (Haddon Heights, N.J.) hit into a fielder's choice. Crawford would go to second on the play, thanks to the Leopards' fifth error of the contest and would score the winning run when senior Eric Wolak (Trumbull, Conn.) singled.

Harrington retired all six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings, striking out two, to improve to 5-0. Reinsel had pitched six-plus innings, allowing a hit and four walks and striking out two. Davidson had two of three Gordon's three hits.

Wong fell to 2-4 after allowing an unearned run on three hits, walking three, and striking out six.

The Leopards drew first blood in game two when freshman Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) singled to drive in Wong, who led off the game with a walk. The lead stayed until Gordon tallied a pair of runs in the third as freshman John Brownell (Glastonbury, Conn.) had an RBI double and scored when Davidson reached on an error.

Wentworth knotted the game at 2-all in the fifth when Wong hit a sacrifice fly to score senior Joe Meucci (West Hartford, Conn.) but the Fighting Scots regained the lead in the sixth on a two-run double off the bat of junior Geoffrey Brown (East Moriches, N.Y.). Down to its final at bat Bolla singled to lead off the inning but Harrington struck out the next three batters to end the game.

Harrington again pitched two innings in relief, improving to 6-0, as he allowed one hit and struck out three in two innings. Freshman Jacob Syed (Niskayuna, N.Y.) pitched the first five-plus innings, allowing two runs (one earned), walking two, and striking out one. Harrington also had a pair of hits.

Senior Adam Farrar (Newport, Vt.) took the loss (2-3), allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, walked one, and struck out three. Bolla and Mailman combined for four of the Leopards' seven hits.

With the wins Gordon improves to 14-18 (7-5) and is at Salve Regina on Monday. Wentworth falls to 15-18 (6-8) and is at UMass Boston on Sunday.
