Baseball Defeats Mass. Maritime, 9-5

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Freshman Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) rapped out four hits and drove in three runs to lead Wentworth to a 9-5 non-league college baseball victory over Massachusetts Maritime Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

Mailman delivered a two-run single in the top of the first that staked the visiting Leopards (14-12) to an early 2-0 advantage, and sophomore Dakota Baird (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) extended that margin to 3-0 in Wentworth's first at-bat with an RBI single. The host Buccaneers (8-11) evened matters without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the frame, as a sacrifice fly by senior Billy Shouldice (Rutland, Vt.), coupled with a wild pitch and a passed ball, evened matters at 3-3. The Leopards used a four-run fifth inning uprising to take a 7-3 lead on a Baird double, an RBI triple by senior Kevin McKenzie (Arlington, Mass.) and a run-scoring single off the bat of junior Ryan Delgado (Wareham, Mass.), but Massachusetts Maritime crept back to within a pair at 7-5 on a fifth inning wild pitch and a sixth inning error. McKenzie's RBI double in the seventh extended the visitors' lead to 8-5, and after escaping a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth, Wentworth closed out the scoring on Mailman's two-bagger that produced his third RBI of the afternoon.

Mailman, McKenzie and Baird combined for eight of the Leopards' 11 hits on the day, as the visitors also received singles from sophomore Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.) and freshman Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.). Junior Ryan Conrad (East Bridgewater, Mass.) earned his first collegiate victory for Wentworth by allowing a pair of hits and a run while fanning two over 4 1/3 innings of relief. Junior Aram Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) collected two of five hits on the day for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received safeties from Shouldice, sophomore Ben Maher (Plymouth, Mass.) and freshman Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) Sophomore Chris Gallagher (East Sandwich, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Buccaneers, allowing four hits and fanning five over 4 1/3 innings in relief to fall to 2-2 on the season.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Salem, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Salem State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader that begins at Noon, while Wentworth hosts Western New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference twinbill on Saturday afternoon in Wenham, Mass. that also begins at Noon.
