Two Baseball Players to Play in Oldtime Baseball Game

BOSTON, Mass. – Two members of the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team have been selected to play in the 18th Annual Oldtime Baseball Game, which will be played this coming Thursday (August 11) at St. Peter's Field in Cambridge, Mass.

Rising senior pitcher Kyle Cruz (Burlington, Conn.) and rising junior catcher Ryan Delgado (Wareham, Mass.) will represent the Leopards in this annual event, a popular contest that has been coordinated since its inception by longtime Boston Herald sports columnist Steve Buckley. This year's game is being played as a benefit for the C2 Mission, which was created to benefit children families affected by Cerebral Palsy and Cystic Fibrosis.

The Oldtime Baseball Game features the participants wearing a wide selection of flannel uniforms that represent virtually every era in baseball history. Used just once a year for this contest, the uniforms represent such long-ago teams as the Boston Braves, St. Louis Browns, Homestead Grays and Kansas City Monarchs.

Cruz began the 2011 campaign with a 1-0 record and a 2.00 earned run average before suffering an injury during his second start of the season, which sidelined him for nearly six weeks.  He finished the season by pitching in a total of seven games, with his last five appearances coming out of the bullpen. He was 1-0 with one save and a 3.32 earned run average. In 21.2 innings of work, he yielded just three walks.

An Honorable Mention All-The Commonwealth Coast Conference selection this past season, Delgado enjoyed an impressive sophomore campaign for the Leopards, leading the team with a .396 (42-for-106) average with five doubles, 25 runs scored, and 17 runs batted in.  His .467 on-base percentage also led the team, while his .443 slugging percentage was second on the team.  Delgado, who had a brief stint with the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Code Baseball League earlier this summer, started 35 of the 37 games in which he played, with all 35 starts coming behind the plate.

Cruz and Delgado are the third and fourth Wentworth players to appear in this game over the last three seasons. In 2009, Chris Sandini became the first Leopard to participate, while last year Sandini and Matt Dannenhoffer donned the vintage uniforms for the evening.

Admission to the event is free, however there is limited bleacher seating. Spectators are encouraged to bring a blanket and/or chair to enjoy the game.
