Hockey Closes out First Semester Play at Becker

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Becker College ice hockey team scored four unanswered goals, including three in the third period, to erase a 2-1 deficit to defeat Wentworth Institute of Technology, 5-2, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth got the only goal of the first period, a period which saw the Leopards hold a 21-7 shot advantage. Freshman Kasey O'Brien (Stoneham, Mass.) notched his first collegiate goal from classmate Alec Taillon (Terrebonne, Que.) and senior Connor Busch (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) at the 2:43 mark of the frame.
  • Special teams were the name of the game in the second period as each team had a power-play goal and the Hawks tallied a shorthanded marker. Becker tied the score at 2-all at the 12:21 mark when freshman Colby Audette (Colchester, Vt.) scored on the power play before the Leopards reclaimed the lead with a power-play goal from junior Brenden Lloyd (Merrick, N.Y.), assisted by sophomores Jake McKenelley (Middleton, Mass.) and Joey O'Leary (Boston, Mass.), with 2:28 left.
  • Becker started their run by beating the buzzer in the second period as sophomore Jake Cagnina (South Berwick, Maine) netted a shorthanded goal with one second left.
  • At the nine-minute mark of the third period, freshman Josh Mead (Sparta, N.H.) put the hosts on top with a goal, which Audette helped to set up. Freshman Luke James (Moon Township, Pa.) added an insurance goal at 15:07 before and empty-net goal from freshman Andrew Dreher (New York, N.Y.) completed the scoring.
  • Sophomore Thomas Draper (Binghamton, N.Y.) made 21 saves in the loss while senior Cody Foster (Saugus, Calif.) made 41 stops in the win.
  • Wentworth had a 43-26 shot advantage.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Today marked the 25th all-time meeting between the two programs with Wentworth holding an 18-6-4 series advantage. The win snapped a five-game (0-4-1) series winless streak for the Hawks. (WIT 18-5-4; 4-0-1 in last five)

  • Wentworth is idle until traveling to the W.B. Mason Winter Classic in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on January 4-5.
