BOSTON, Mass. – Former Wentworth Institute of Technology hockey standout Joey Sides has been is expected to make his American Hockey League debut on Friday night (November 30) when the St. John's IceCaps travel to Albany, N.Y., to face off against the Albany Devils.
Sides was recalled from the Colorado Eagles of the East Coast Hockey League on Thursday, where he had played in 19 games, scoring 18 points (nine goals, nine assists). This marked the second season he was with Colorado, and, in 48 career ECHL contests he recorded 47 points (24 goals, 23 assists).
Prior to joining Colorado in 2012, the Sun Valley, Idaho, native played in 29 games for the Heerenveen Flyers in the Netherlands and spent two seasons (2009-2010, 2010-2011 with the Arizona Sundogs of the Central Hockey League. While with Arizona he played in 123 games, scoring 44 goals and adding 54 assists for 98 points. He was named to the CHL All-Star Team in 2011.
Sides graduated from Wentworth in 2009 with his Bachelor's degree in Construction Management and played both forward and defenseman for the Black & Gold during his four years. A three-year captain, he scored 32 goals and assisted on 53 others for 85 points during his 90-game career.
Despite injuries limiting him to just 14 games as a freshman, he scored five goals and assisted on 11 others for 16 points and followed that up with a 22-point performance as a sophomore. His junior season, in which he primarily played defense, he scored a pair of goals and added 16 assists for 18 points.
After returning to forward as a senior, he scored 17 goals and assisted on 12 others for 29 points in 23 games, which earned him Honorable Mention All-ECAC Northeast honors. He presently ranks 14th on Wentworth's all-time scoring list as well as ranking 15th in career goals and helped the Leopards to ECAC Northeast title game appearances as a sophomore and again as a senior.
