Hockey Shut Out by Tufts, 2-0

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Tim Mitropoulos (Winchester, Mass.) and senior Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, Ariz.) each scored goals, while junior Brian Phillips (Colleyville, Texas) turned aside all 22 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season as the Tufts hockey team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over Wentworth in non-conference action at Matthews Arena.

The Jumbos (5-7-1) outshot the Leopards by an 11-4 margin in the opening frame, with one of those shots coming when Mitropoulos got the only goal the visitors would need on an unassisted marker coming at 8:26.

At the 2:43 mark of the second period the visitors increased their lead to 2-0 when Plimmer was set up by freshman Stewart Bell (Marietta, Ga.) and sophomore Blake Edwards (Columbus, Ohio) for his sixth marker of the season. Wentworth held a 12-8 shot advantage in the period but could not find the back of the net.

Both teams had chances in the third period, including when Wentworth pulled sophomore Alex Peck (Kirkland, Que.) with 1:05 left for an extra attacker, but neither team would score in the third period. The Jumbos held a slight, 7-6 shot advantage in the stanza.

Peck made 24 saves, as the Leopards were outshot by a 26-22 margin on the night.

Tufts resumes NESCAC play this weekend, traveling to Trinity on Friday and Wesleyan on Saturday. Wentworth, which sees its record fall to 7-7-1, resumes ECAC Northeast play on Sunday when the Black & Gold hosts Curry in a re-match of the last two conference championship games.
