Hockey Rallies Past Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore Mike Domsodi (Kirkland, Que.) scored two goals and senior Shaun Jameson (Long Beach, Calif.) added two assists as the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team scored four unanswered goals to defeat Western New England, 4-2, in an ECAC Northeast contest at Smead Arena.

Western New England, which used a late goal to take the first meeting of the year between the two teams, 3-2, got on the board first when freshman Chris Lembo (Springfield, Mass.) scored a power play goal at 13:57 of the opening frame, assisted by junior Brian Prost (Parma, Ohio) and sophomore Brandon Stroud (Clarksville, Ind.). That was the only goal of the first period, a period that saw the Golden Bears hold a 15-13 shot advantage.

The hosts increased their lead to 2-0 at 6:49 of the second period when Stroud scored from Prost and junior John Kelly (Staten Island, N.Y.). Wentworth responded 1:46 later when Domsodi scored on the power play from Jameson to make it a 2-1 game before sophomore Kevin Crowe (Galloway, N.J.) and freshman Adam Frank (Clarkston, Mich.) set up Domsodi at 14:39, tying the game at 2-all.

Wentworth capped off a three-goal period and took the lead when sophomore Sean McLaughlin (North Billerica, Mass.) was set up by junior Cameron Gibson (Valencia, Calif.) and Jameson with 2:32 left in the period. The Leopards held a 17-10 shot advantage in the middle stanza.

With 1:06 left in the third period, the Golden Bears went on a power play and pulled junior Eric Sorensen (Fairport, N.Y.) for a two-man advantage. However, senior Reed Rushing (Seattle, Wash.) sealed the game with a shorthanded, empty-net goal with 20 seconds left, which was assisted by sophomore Beau Burgau (New Ulm, Minn.).

Freshman Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) made 29 saves in the win, while Sorensen made 39. Wentworth, which outshot Western New England by a 13-6 margin in the third period, held a 43-31 shot advantage for the game.

Winners of two straight, the Leopards improve to 9-7-1 overall and move into first place in ECAC Northeast play with a 5-2 record. Wentworth is at Salve Regina on Saturday. Western New England falls to 7-11-0 (4-3) and hosts Nichols on Saturday night.
