BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman goaltender Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) turned aside 30 of the 31 shots he faced as the Wentworth Institute of Technology hockey team received goals from three different scorers in a 3-1 win over Curry in and ECAC Northeast contest played at Matthews Arena.
The Leopards, who won for the first time this season on their home ice, wasted little time getting on the board when sophomore Seric Kapp (Scheafferstown, Pa.) netted a power play goal at 2:09 of the opening frame. Sophomore Ben Iwanowski (Dorval, Que.) and junior Andrew Yarber (Livonia, Mich.) picked up assists of Kapp's second marker of the season.
Curry used a power play goal of its own to tie the game at 14:16 of the period when sophomore Jordan Reed (Ajax, Ont.) put home the rebound of a senior Casey Brugman (Winthrop, Mass.) shot. Sophomore Braeden Ruud (Vermillion, Alta.) also picked up an assist on the goal. The Colonels held a 12-10 shot advantage after the first 20 minutes.
Wentworth pulled ahead 2-1 on a junior Cameron Gibson (Valencia, Calif.) goal, which was assisted by freshman Mike Cox (Marlborough, Mass.) and sophomore Sean McLaughlin (North Billerica, Mass.) at 5:37 of the middle stanza and added an insurance goal 1:55 into the third period on a power play marker from sophomore Kevin Crowe (Galloway, N.J.), which was assisted by senior Shaun Jameson (Long Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Curtis Heinz (Grand Rapids, Mich.).
The Colonels, who held a 12-6 shot advantage over the final 20:00, pulled sophomore Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.) for an extra attacker with 1:08 left but could not decrease the two-goal deficit.
Nineteen of Miller's saves came over the final two periods as he improves to 5-2 on the season, which Mohney turned aside 21 shots. Both teams' netmimders made numerous saves on shots from point-blank range, including Miller stopping Reed on a breakaway in the third period.
With the win Wentworth improves to 8-7-1 overall and 4-2-0 in league play. The Leopards are at Western New England on Thursday night. Curry dropped its third straight to fall to 7-8-1 (3-2-1) and is at Becker on Wednesday.
