BOSTON, Mass. – Led by sophomore all-tournament honoree Beau Burgau (New Ulm, N.M.) the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology closed out play in the 48th Annual UMass Boston Codfish Bowl Tournament with a hard fought 2-1 win over of the Falcons of Fitchburg State University in the third place game Sunday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center Ice Arena.
With Sunday's victory, the Leopards pushed their record back over .500 and now sit with a 7-6-1 mark going into the second half of the season. Fitchburg State fell to 4-7-1 following the one-goal decision.
Junior Cameron Gibson's (Valencia, Calif.) marker proved to be the deciding factor for Wentworth as he scored a power-play goal at the 8:51 mark in the second period to break the 1-1 draw. Freshman Devin Cobbold (Ottawa, Ont.) and sophomore Curtis Heinz (Grand Rapids, Mich.) assisted what would become the game-winning tally.
Cobbold also found the back of the net in Sunday's win as he scored the Leopards first goal of the day at the 10:52 mark of the opening period. Heinz and sophomore Mike Domsodi (Kirkland, Que.) assisted on the then go-ahead score.
Fitchburg State managed to tie the game at 1-1 early in the second period on a power-play goal from senior Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.).
Between the pipes freshman netminder Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) totaled 18 stops to earn his fourth victory of the year (4-2-0). Sophomore Ryan Wysocki (Grand Rapids, Mich.), who was also named to the all-tournament team totaled a combined 42 saves in the loss.
As a team, Wentworth dominated all 60 minutes outshooting the Falcons 44-19. On the power-play Fitchburg finished 1-for-4, while Wentworth was 1-for-1.
The Leopards return to action on January 15 when they host Tufts University at 8:15 p.m. Fitchburg State resumes MASCAC play on Thursday when the Falcons travel to Framingham State.
