Weinberger Nets Two in Women's Soccer's Win at Emmanuel

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Amanda Weinberger (Colchester, Conn.) scored a pair of second half goals to lift the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over cross-neighborhood rival Emmanuel College in a non-conference contest played at Clemente Field.

The win marked the first time in the nine meetings the Black & Gold have defeated their Colleges of the Fenway counterpart as the Saints had been 7-0-1 over the last eight times the two schools met with Wentworth's last win coming in an 8-1 triumph on Sept. 1, 2005. The Leopards improve to 3-1 on the season while the Saints slip to 2-2 on the season.

Despite a scoreless first half, Wentworth held a 7-2 shot advantage, with six of the seven shots going on goal.

Early in the second half, Weinberger had a chance to put the Leopards on the board, however freshman Victoria Laroche (Hudson, N.H.) made a diving stop to keep the game scoreless.

On their next possession, the Leopards broke the ice when freshman Emily Richard (Fremont, N.H.) broke free in the midfield, finding Weinberger streaking down the right side. The sophomore's breakaway goal sailed past Laroche's outstretched arms at 57:43.

With 8:18 remaining, Weinberger scored her second of the game and fifth of the season after the Saints were called for a penalty inside the box. Weinberger took the kick – her second in the last three games – and found the back of the net.

Emmanuel had a chance to pull within a goal with less than four minutes remaining, however a shot attempt hit the post.

Senior Beverly Farris (Palmer, Mass.) made four saves to pick up her second shutout of the season. Laroche stopped 11 shots in the loss. The Leopards held a 14-7 shot advantage and took three of the game's four corner kicks.

Both teams begin conference play on Saturday as Wentworth is at Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Gordon while Emmanuel is at Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Suffolk.
