BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Savannah Morford (Darien, Ill.) of the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team (5-1) led the charge in Wednesday evening's triumph, leading with 13 kills in the Black & Gold's sweep over the visiting Colby-Sawyer Chargers (0-8).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Chargers scored three straight in the first set before the Leopards responded with five straight, led by two kills from Morford and another by senior Abby Warren (Gilmanton, N.H.). The two teams swapped points until the Leopards set out to a 13-10 lead thanks to a kill from freshman Kayla DeCastro (Miami, Fla.). A kill and service ace by Warren pushed the lead to 17-12 until kills by Warren, DeCastro, Morford, and junior Helen Barthe (Blythewood, S.C.) clinched the hosts a 25-18 set win.
  • Two kills by Barthe helped the Leopards get out to a 5-1 lead in the second set before three kills by Morford helped continue the lead to 9-4. A kill by DeCastro continued the advantage to 11-5 before a Barthe kill helped extend the lead to 15-6. Kills by Morford and junior Abby Maher (North Granby, Conn.) brought the lead to 20-12 after a push back by the Chargers. Two service aces by Morford, sandwiching a kill by DeCastro, eventually gave the Leopards a 25-15 set win and a 2-0 match lead.
  • Colby-Sawyer scored two straight points to begin the third set until errors gave the hosts a 3-2 edge. The two teams traded points, working the score up to 11-11, until Wentworth separated themselves in a 16-11 lead thanks to kills by Warren and Barthe and a service ace from freshman Kinsey Lutz (North Prairie, Wis.). The Leopards cruised to a 25-14 set win and a 3-0 match victory.
