BOSTON, Mass. – Matching her career-high with 16 kills on the night, junior Helen Barthe (Blythewood, S.C.) led the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team (13-5) to their fifth straight win in a sweep over Dean (5-14) Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Back-to-back kills by freshman Kayla DeCastro (Miami, Fla.) and senior Shelby Seage (Cocoa, Fla.) put the hosts ahead 2-0 in the first set before Dean eventually came back to take a 6-4 advantage. A service ace by Seage and a kill by senior Abby Warren (Gilmanton, N.H.) helped the Leopards regain their lead at 7-6 before two kills by DeCastro paced the hosts to a 13-7 lead. Back-to-back kills by Barthe continued the lead to 16-8 before three more from the junior added to a 19-10 lead. Two kills by Seage and another by DeCastro earned the Leopards a 25-15 set win.
  • Four straight points for the Bulldogs was quickly stopped with a kill by Barthe, marking a 4-1 score in set two. Down 7-3, two kills from Seage helped the Leopards knot the score at seven-all before Dean gained a 13-12 edge. A kill by Barthe knotted the score once more before the two teams traded points to a 18-18 score. A slew of errors for the Bulldogs eventually earned Wentworth a 25-20 set win and a 2-0 match lead.
  • Wentworth scored six of the first seven points in the third set, taking a 6-1 lead with help by way of two kills apiece from Barthe and Seage. Errors plagued the Bulldogs, giving Wentworth a 12-4 lead before kills by Warren and DeCastro and a service ace by freshman Kinsey Lutz (North Prairie, Wis.) brought the lead to 17-6. Two service aces by sophomore Brenda Soares (Burlington, Mass.) kickstarted a 23-10 lead for the Leopards just before the hosts grabbed a 25-16 set win and a 3-0 match win.
