DARTMOUTH, Mass. – On Wednesday night, the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team (8-5) dropped a non-conference match in straight sets to the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth (8-6).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Behind 2-0 to start the first set, Wentworth rallied to take a 3-2 lead thanks to a kill from senior Abby Warren (Gilmanton, N.H.) and a service ace from freshman Kate McLane (Columbus, Ohio). Behind 6-5, a kill from sophomore Riley Schoonmaker (Montgomery, N.Y.) tied the score at six before two kills from McLane helped the Leopards claim an 11-8 lead. A kill by Warren continued the lead to 14-11 before the Corsairs notched 14 of the next 15 points in the set, taking a 25-15 set win.
  • UMass Dartmouth rattled off nine straight points to start the second set before a kill by graduate student Riley Waggoner (Simi Valley, Calif.) slowed their roll at 9-1. The Corsairs scored 12 of the next 13 points, taking a 21-2 lead, before kills by freshmen Savannah Morford (Darien, Ill.) and Kinsey Lutz (North Prairie, Wis.) cut the deficit to 21-6, but the hosts eventually grabbed a 25-7 set win and a 2-0 match lead.
  • Behind 2-1 in the third set, a kill from Waggoner tied the score at two-all. Behind 5-3, a kill from junior Ema Thompson (Lewiston, Idaho) dwindled the deficit to one at 5-4 before the Corsairs stretched their lead to 9-4. A kill from McLane later cut the deficit to 11-8 and another at 12-10 cut the deficit to one. UMass Dartmouth held their narrow lead to an 18-15 advantage before kills from Schoonmaker and McLane helped Wentworth take a 19-18 edge. The two teams knotted the score at 20 apiece before the Corsairs later took a 23-21 advantage. Behind 25-24, a kill from junior Helen Barthe (Blythewood, S.C.) knotted the score at 25 each. A kill from Thompson tied the score at 26-26 before the Corsairs pulled away with a 29-27 set win and a 3-0 match lead.
