WENHAM, Mass. – With tonight's triumph in straight sets over Gordon College women's volleyball (13-11, 4-3 CCC), the Wentworth Institute of Technology (20-5, 7-0 CCC) clinched the top seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference's regular season standings and extended their win streak to twelve matches heading into their regular season finale on Saturday.

With the win, the Black & Gold clinch at least a share of the regular season title along with locking up the number one seed in the upcoming CCC Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth scored ten of the first 11 points in the first set with help on kills from junior Ema Thompson (Lewiston, Idaho), freshman Kate McLane (Columbus, Ohio), and freshman Emma Sanders (Mount Pleasant, S.C.). The Leopards continued their lead to 14-6 on a kill by Thompson before a kill by graduate student Riley Waggoner (Simi Valley, Calif.) gave the Black & Gold a 17-8 advantage. After a pushback by the Scots marked a 21-14 score, kills by Sanders and Thompson coupled with errors gave the Leopards a 25-15 set win.
  • Two kills by Thompson and another by Sanders brought the Leopards to a 5-1 advantage to start the second set. Ahead 6-4, Wentworth scored eight of the next nine points, with kills coming from McLane, Thompson, and sophomore Riley Schoonmaker (Montgomery, N.Y.) to take a 14-5 lead. After three straight points for Gordon, two kills by McLane continued the lead to 16-8 before another kill by McLane marked a 18-11 lead. After Gordon cut the deficit to five at 20-15, a kill by Sanders and a slew of errors eventually gave the Leopards a 25-16 set win and a 2-0 match lead.
  • The two teams traded points to begin the third set, with three kills by Sanders pushing the Leopards to a knot at 4-4. Gordon's eventual 7-5 lead was erased by the Leopards with the Black & Gold gaining a 15-8 lead thanks to help of three kills from Waggoner. The Leopards never looked back, holding a 21-13 lead before kills by Sanders, Thompson, and McLane gave Wentworth a deciding 25-17 set win and a 3-0 match win.

SERIES NOTES:

  • The Leopards have won six of the last seven meetings between the two teams.
