STANDISH, Maine – A mid-game surge, paced by a stretch of six unanswered goals, helped the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team (3-1) separate themselves from the Monks of Saint Joseph's (Me.) (1-2) by a 13-10 score Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a Monks' goal opened the scoring 2:12 into the initial frame, the Leopards took a 2-1 edge by the 8:34 mark thanks to back-to-back tallies by senior Tyler Hoar (Hampton, N.H.) and sophomore Tyler Longo (Kingston, N.Y.). The hosts tied the score at two-all with just over four minutes left before freshman Richard Roy (Feeding Hills, Mass.) responded with one of his own, giving the Black & Gold a 3-2 edge after one.
  • Two goals for the Leopards with the man advantage, coming from sophomore Colin Ocampo (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) and senior Logan Maklan (Boca Raton, Fla.), extended Wentworth's lead to 5-2 in the second quarter.
  • Two goals by graduate student Xavier Michaud (Wales, Maine) and another by graduate student Nathaniel Girardin (Brunswick, Maine) brought the Monks back and knotted the score at five aside with 2:17 left before the break. Junior Jared Hiller (North Andover, Mass.) scored with 15 seconds left to give Wentworth a 6-5 lead at the halfway mark.
  • The Leopards rattled off five straight in the first 5:52 of the third quarter, with two goals off the stick off junior Kobi Buffa (Craryville, N.Y.) and another by Maklan, to raise their lead to 11-5. Michaud scored at the 8:01 mark to cut the deficit to 11-6 before another tally for the hosts cut the deficit further to 11-7 heading into the final frame.
  • Two goals by junior Tyler Moscato (West Haven Conn.) with 10:38 left in the fourth quarter marked an 11-9 score before Wentworth responded with goals by Longo and freshman Gabe Cobham (Westbury, N.Y.) within a 1:35 span to regain the Leopards' four-goal lead. Moscato scored again with seven seconds left, but it wasn't enough, as the Leopards held on for a 13-10 win, their third in a row.
  • Senior Connor Charron (Tewksbury, Mass.) led the efforts at the X, going 21-for-27 with 12 ground balls. Junior Liam Greene (Mansfield, Mass.) made eight saves for the Monks in the setback while junior Tom Gardner (West Windsor, N.J.) turned aside 18 for Wentworth.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Winners of three straight, Wentworth leads the all-time series, 5-1.
