Stewart Records Triple-Double as Endicott Rallies Past Men's Basketball

BEVERLY, Mass. – Junior Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.) of the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team (4-2, 1-1 CCC) tallied the first known triple-double in program history (15 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists) as the Leopards fell to the Endicott Gulls (4-3, 2-0 CCC) by a 94-85 score Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A three by freshman Elijah Kinney (Nashville, Tenn.) gave the Gulls an initial 3-0 lead before a three-pointer by junior Jack Connell (Walpole, Mass.) after three points by Stewart gave Wentworth a 6-3 lead. The Leopards spewed out a 12-1 run, including three-pointers by Connell and sophomore Nathan Brinkman (Trumbull, Conn.), to bring the score to 18-4. After another two points by Kinney marked an 18-6 score, the Leopards again went on another run, this time 13-6, to take a 31-12 lead.
  • Endicott scored five straight to cut the deficit to 31-17, including two from graduate student Ty Vitko (Dover, N.H.), before the Gulls followed with a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to 33-23. Senior Sam Goy (Derry, N.H.) made a three to extend the Leopards' lead to 36-23 before another three by sophomore Russell Dolabany (Westwood, Mass.) pushed the lead to 39-23.
  • Three points by senior Jalen Echevarria (Lynn, Mass.) cut Endicott's deficit to 39-26 before another three from Goy pushed the lead to 42-26. The hosts ended the half on a 15-6 run, including 10 points from Echevarria, to mark a 48-41 score at the break.
  • The two teams traded baskets to open the second half, with the Gulls later cutting the deficit to 53-45 thanks to a Vitko three. Three points by Goy and two by Connell pushed the Leopards' lead to 58-45 before eight straight points for the Gulls, including two on a dunk by Kinney, cut the deficit to 58-53. A Connell three cut Endicott's run at 61-53 before a three by Kinney later trimmed the deficit to four at 63-59.
  • The two teams once again traded scores, working the score to 67-61, before Stewart and Echevarria traded layups to mark a 69-63 game. Three points by Stewart were followed by five straight for the Gulls, including three from Vitko, to bring the score to 72-68. Five straight points by Stewart was followed by a three from Vitko, marking a 77-71 score, before Brinkman and Vitko traded three-pointers to raise the score to 80-74.
  • Another Vitko three and free throw makes later tied the score at 81-all. Three points by Vitko later gave Endicott an 84-81 edge before four points by Kinney pushed their lead to 88-81. The two teams traded points to run out the clock, with four free throw makes by Vitko helping seal a 94-85 win.
  • Vitko lead all scorers with 29 points, while Echevarria (21 points) and Kinney (19) chipped in double-digits for Endicott. Stewart led Wentworth's efforts with his triple-double (15-10-11) while Connell (23 points – team-high), Goy (13), and Brinkman (11) all added with double-figure point totals.
