Hot Shooting Men's Basketball Blazes Gordon

BOSTON, Mass. – A hot shooting Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team (7-8, 3-4 CCC) blazed the Gordon Fighting Scots (3-12, 1-6 CCC) in league play Saturday afternoon with the Leopards prevailing with a dominant 97-63 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth tipped off play with an 8-0 run, with three points apiece for junior Jack Connell (Walpole, Mass.) and sophomore Nathan Brinkman (Trumbull, Conn.). Four points for the Scots by graduate student Justin Yu (North Brunswick, N.J.) cut the deficit to 8-4 before a three by Connell and another by Brinkman gave the Leopards a 14-4 lead. Two free throw makes for Yu were outbid by another Brinkman three, marking a 17-6 score, and another two points for the Scots were matched by a three from sophomore Russell Dolabany (Westwood, Mass.), raising the score to 20-8.
  • A three by junior Bryce Smith (San Francisco, Calif.) cut the Scots' deficit to 20-11 and was matched by another Connell three, marking a 23-11 score. The Leopards scored four straight, holding a 27-11 lead, before the two teams traded scores to a 29-15 score. A three by Yu later cut Gordon's deficit to 31-18 before six points by junior Niko Rosich (Chicago, Ill.) marked a 37-18 lead.
  • After a Yu jumper cut the Scots' deficit to 37-20, a three by senior Sam Goy (Derry, N.H.) extended Wentworth's lead to 40-20 before the Leopards rattled off seven of the next nine, including three apiece for Brinkman and sophomore Dylan Olson (Southington, Conn.), marking a 47-22 game. Connell and junior Treyton Tebbs (Cedar City, Utah) traded scores to mark a 49-24 score before the Leopards outpaced the Scots 9-5 heading into the break, marking a 58-29 score.
  • The two teams swapped scores to mark a 60-30 score at the beginning of the second half before Wentworth drained four straight followed by Smith three, marking a 64-33 score. Goy and Connell earned the Leopards five straight, marking a 69-33 lead, before Gordon answered with six straight. The two teams swapped scores, marking a 73-41 game, before a three by sophomore Mike Yentin (Beverly, Mass.) extended the Leopards' lead to 76-41.
  • Another Yentin three later carried the lead to 80-42 before a Rosich three later marked an 85-44 lead. The two teams swapped baskets to an 87-50 score before Yentin and Olson combined for five points to give Wentworth a 92-50 lead. Gordon cut the deficit by four at 92-54 between Olson notched five of the next eight points, marking a 97-57 score. Gordon finished the game with six straight points, marking a 97-63 final.
  • The Black & Gold shot 54 percent from the floor, including an incredible 53.3 percent from three (16-for-30). Connell (16 points), Dolabany (15), and Brinkman (14) led two others in double-figures, while Yu, Smith, and Tebbs all finished with 11 points for the Scots in their setback.

SERIES NOTES:

  • The Leopards have won three straight against the Fighting Scots dating back to last season., with today being the 67th all-time matchup.
