BRISTOL, R.I. – Senior Sam Goy (Derry, N.H.) led three Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball student-athletes with 23 points as the Leopards held on to defeat Roger Williams, 72-70, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Wednesday night.

Winners of two in a row and six of their last seven, Wentworth improves to 13-11 overall and 8-7 in CCC play, while the Hawks fall to 11-13 (8-7).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A Goy three pointer with 13:54 left gave Wentworth the upper hand at 9-7 and was the first of four leads changes over the next two and a half minutes. Roger Williams senior Justin Tedeschi (Smithfield, R.I.) hit a three with 11:12 left to give the Hawks a 17-15 lead and start a 17-4 run which saw the hosts lead, 31-19, after a junior Will McDonald (York, Maine) basket with 5:29 left.
  • Junior Jack Connell (Walpole, Mass.) knocked down a three to start a 10-0 run which saw the Leopards trim the lead to 31-29 after Connell made two of three free throws with 2:25 remaining. The teams traded baskets before Connell drained a jumper to make it 33-31 with 1:46 left. Sophomore Philip Sughrue (Winchester, Mass.) and senior Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) each scored baskets, putting Roger Williams on top at the half, 37-31.
  • The Hawks took a 48-38 lead with 15:34 remaining before Goy drained a three to start a 17-2 run as freshman Sean Racette (Trumbull, Conn.) hit two free throws with 10:55 left to make it 55-50. With 6:23 to go, Annus hit two free throws, bringing the hosts to within one at 61-60. Layups from Goy and junior Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.) extended the lead to 65-60 with just under four minutes left and a layup from Connell made it 69-63 with 2:15 left.
  • After Annus knocked down a jumper, Stewart put home a second-chance basket, giving the Black & Gold a 71-65 lead with 30 seconds left. Annus made two free throws with 12 ticks on the clock to make it 71-67 and Goy's one of two from the line extended the lead to 72-67 with 12 seconds to go. After two missed free throws, Annus hit a three with four seconds left, making it a two-point game. On the inbound pass, Wentworth was fouled, however, the free throw was missed. The Hawks called time out and, out of the time out, a desperation three to win it hit the back of the rim.
  • Goy finished 8-for-15 from the floor, which included going 6-for-8 from behind the arc. He also had nine rebounds. Connell scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out five assists, while Stewart had 15 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Wentworth had a 41-32 rebounding advantage.
  • Annus led the Hawks with 23 points.
