WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior Jack Connell (Walpole, Mass.) led five student-athletes in double-figures, scoring a game-high 20 points as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team battled past the University of Hartford, 82-67, on Saturday afternoon

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  •  With the score tied at 3-all early in the contest, Wentworth used a 10-2 run to take a 13-5 lead with sophomore Nathan Brinkman (Trumbull, Conn.) converting a three-point play with 16:06 left. After graduate student Trayon Rumley (New Haven, Conn.) hit a three to end the run, the Leopards responded upped their lead to 25-8, using a 12-0 run over a span of nearly the next three minutes.
  • Hartford clawed back to cut the lead to four (31-27) after a layup from freshman Joshua Petion (Brooklyn, N.Y.) capped off a 19-3 run. The Leopards extended their led to 11, using an 11-4 run, and took a 42-31 lead with 1:10 left when freshman Sean Racette (Trumbull, Conn.) hit two free throws. The Black & Gold led, 42-24, at the break.
  • The second half saw Wentworth up their lead to 13 when senior Sam Goy (Derry, N.H.) converted a layup at the 15:13 mark and took a 16-point lead on a junior Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.) jumper with 9:28 remaining. Back-to-back baskets from Stewart pushed Wentworth's lead to 19 (73-54) with 6:16 left, a lead matched when Connell knocked down a three with 5:32 left. The Leopards maintained the double-digit lead through the reminder of the game, not letting the hosts cut it to less than 15.
  • Connell scored 12 of his 20 points from behind the arc. Stewart made 6-of-10 from the floor, scoring 16 and hauling down 10 rebounds. Goy was 6-of-9 from the floor for 13 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Russell Dolabany (Westwood, Mass.) tallied 11 and Racette scored 10.
