BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Keenan Robertson (Rochester, N.Y.) and graduate student Evan Cook (Dunstable, Mass.) each scored a game-high 28 points as the Suffolk University men's basketball team (7-5, 4-2 Commonwealth Coast Conference) defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 80-73, in CCC action Saturday afternoon.

Wentworth senior Sam Goy (Derry, N.H.), who had a career-high 23 points this past Tuesday night, toppled his career-best as he scored 27 points, with 19 of those coming in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Suffolk jumped out to a 10-6 lead at the 14:52 mark after a Robertson layup and, after a junior Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.) layup cut the lead in half, Robertson knocked down a jumper to give the hosts a 12-8 lead.
  • Three free throws from Goy and a layup from junior Jack Connell (Walpole, Mass.), sandwiched around a Robertson layup made it a one-point (14-13) game with 12:45 left in the half before a Connell three with 11:48 to play tied the game at 16-all. A minute later the Leopards took their first lead of the contest (19-18) on a three from sophomore Nathan Brinkman (Trumbull, Conn.).
  • With the score tied at 21-all, Suffolk scored six straight points to take a 27-21 lead with 7:39 left. After a Cook three with 4:22 left made it 32-27, Stewart made a layup and Connell knocked down a three to tie the game at 32-all. Scoring four straight points, the Rams reclaimed the lead (36-32), however, two free throws from Connell and a layup from Goy knotted the score at 36-all with 30 seconds left. The hosts took a 38-36 lead at the break after Cook made a layup as time was winding down.
  • A Stewart basket and a three from Connell gave Wentworth a 41-40 lead early in the second half before an 8-2 Suffolk run put the Rams back on top, 48-43, with 15:16 left. Suffolk extended its lead to six on a Cook layup with 12:54 left. Brinkman hit two free throws and Goy put down a three to bring the Black & Gold within one (52-51) with 11:14 left and, with 7:28 left, Connell hit two free throws to tie the game at 57-all.
  • Suffolk went on an 8-0 run, with six of those points coming from Cook, and took a 65-57 lead after two Robertson free throws with 4:47 to play. Goy followed with back-to-back makes form behind the arc, cutting the lead to two (65-63) with 3:31 remaining. Robertson hit a pair of free throws and junior Devin Dzikas (Clifton Park, N.Y.) hit a three to extend the lead to 70-63. A three pointer and a three-point play from Goy, sandwiched around a Robertson layup, kept the Leopards within three with 1:33 left. The Rams went 6-for-6 from the line down the stretch to hold off Wentworth's comeback attempt.
  • Goy was 9-for-17 from the floor, including going 5-for-9 from behind the arc. Connell finished with 18 points, while Stewart (11) and Brinkman (10) each scored in double figures for Wentworth. The Leopards had a 40-34 rebounding advantage in the contest.
