First Half Run Lifts Wilkes to Victory over Women's Lacrosse

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Wilkes University women's lacrosse team used an 12-0 run in the first half to break open a close game, en route to a 24-5 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.

The Colonels (1-2) scored three goals in the first 3:11 of the contest before the Leopards (0-2) closed the gap to 3-2 with a pair of goals 1:17 apart. Wilkes scored the next 12 goals, taking a 15-2 lead with 4:34 remaining in the half. Wentworth ended the run with a goal with 2:03 left in the frame.

Wilkes increased its lead to 18-3 after scoring the first three goals of the second half before a Wentworth goal cut it to 18-4. The Colonels tallied the next five goals before the Leopards got their final goal of the contest with 5:07 left.

Sophomore Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) had two Wentworth goals with classmate Leah Cummins (Plymouth, Mass.) and juniors Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.) and Alissa Cirio (Valhalla, N.Y.) also scoring for the Black & Gold. Freshman Marissa Nelson (Cranston, R.I.) had an assist.

Paradis and senior Brandie Holland (Lynn, Mass.) won four and three draw controls, respectively, while junior Courtney McCormick (Hanson, Mass.) and sophomore Caitlin McCormick (Hanson, Mass.) picking up a pair of ground balls apiece. Courtney McCormick also had three caused turnovers.

Sophomore Liz Gunning (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made two saves in 30:00 of action while junior Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) had two second-half saves.

Wentworth will face Medaille on Thursday morning.
