BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) scored a program-record seven goals and assisted on two others to help pace the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team to a 17-16 victory over MCLA in non-conference action Monday afternoon.
With the win the Leopards snap a 15-game losing streak, which dates back to last season, and improves to 1-3 on the season. The Trailblazers fall to 1-2 on the 2017 campaign.
Paradis scored her first of the game with 16:00 remaining off a pass from classmate Leah Cummins (Plymouth, Mass.). MCLA responded with four straight goals in a span of four and a half minutes with senior Natalie Caney (Belchertown, Mass.) finding the back of the net three times.
Five straight Leopard goals gave the Black & Gold a 9-8 lead with 2:17 left in the half, a lead they would carry into the break. Paradis and freshman Kaitlyn Darveau (South China, Maine) had two goals each and senior Brandie Holland (Lynn, Mass.) scored once.
The Trailblazers scored the first three goals of the second half and made it 11-9 with 21:21 remaining. Sophomore Beatrice Lechler (Point Lookout, N.Y.), junior Mackenzie Cutler (East Amherst, N.Y.), and freshman Kim Granito (Glenmont, N.Y.) provided the offense.
Paradis and Holland scored within 2:12 of each other as Wentworth re-claimed the lead. However, Cutler, senior Natalie Caney (Belchertown, Mass.), and Granito scored within 1:10 of each other to give MCLA a 14-12 lead.
Holland and Paradis scored 11 seconds apart to pull the Leopards within one. Cutler increased the lead to two on a free position shot with 10:58 left but the Leopards scored the next four, including Paradis scoring twice to make it 17-15.
With 1:20 remaining, Carney pulled MCLA within a goal. The Trailblazers won the ensuing draw and brought the ball into the Wentworth zone. Sophomore Caitlin McCormick (Hanson, Mass.) caused a game-saving turnover and after the Leopards had a successful clear, they ran out the clock to pick up the win.
Paradis also finished with 12 draw controls; the second-most in a game in program history and also scooped up five ground balls. Holland finished with five goals and scooped up seven ground balls while Darveau added three markers. McCormick had six ground balls and caused four turnovers.
Caney led MCLA with a nine-point game, scoring six times and recording three assists to go along with six draw controls, four caused turnovers, and seven ground balls. Cutler finished with four goals and two assists to go along with five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Junior Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) picked up the win, making a pair of saves in the second half. Sophomore Liz Gunning (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made three saves in the first half. Freshman Julia Coughlin (Wolfeboro, N.H.) was tagged with the loss, making six second-half saves. Sophomore Zoe Elwell (Clifton Park, N.Y.) made nine stops in the first half. Wentworth had advantages in shots (36-28), draw controls (20-15), and ground balls (37-29).
