Farris Nets Five Points in Women's Soccer Win at NEC

HENNIKER, N.H. — Freshman Beverly Farris (Palmer, Mass.) had a collegiate debut to remember, scoring two goals and dishing out an assist as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team opened the 2011 campaign with a 4-2 win over New England College in women's soccer action Thursday evening.

The host Pilgrims would open the scoring at the 16:45 mark as sophomore Jillian Zanine (Bethel, Conn.) would deflect a pass off a Wentworth defender and into the net putting the Pilgrims up 1-0.

Wentworth would even the game in the 36th minute as junior Elizabeth Somma (Windham, Maine) would fire in a shot that would sail over the head of Pilgrim keeper Alyssa Whitcomb (Littleton, Mass.).  The Leopards would strike again just two minutes later as Farris would put in a shot that would deflect off both the crossbar and the post putting Wentworth up 2-1.

The Leopards extended their lead to 3-1 just 12 minutes into the second half as junior Danielle Weiler (Becket, Mass.) would convert on a cross from Farris. Farris would give the Leopards even more breathing room as she would head in a floating pass from junior Carli Cabana (East Sandwich, Mass.) just 30 seconds later.

The hosts would grab a goal back in the 78th minute as senior captain Veronica Hytner (St. James, N.Y.) would put in a free kick.

Picking up the win in goal for Wentworth was junior Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) who finished with three saves. Whitcomb collected six saves on the evening.

New England College returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 3 when the Pilgrims travel to Colby-Sawyer to square off against Plymouth State in tournament play. Wentworth will battle non-conference opponent Emerson College at Parsons Field in Brookline on Monday at 6:00 p.m.
