BOSTON, Mass. – The Gordon College women's soccer team scored two goals in each half, en route to a 4-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played on Sweeney Field.
The Fighting Scots scored the only goal they would need at the 5:15 mark when junior midfielder Karina Scavo (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) picked up a loose ball inside the box and drilled a shot to the upper right corner. Gordon increased its lead to 2-0 at 12:54 on an own goal, as an initial shot was saved, but redirected into the Leopards' goal.
Wentworth had a chance to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 54th minute, but a goal that was scored off of a corner kick play was nullified due to an offsides call.
Senior defender Hala Coker (East Falmouth, Mass.) gave Gordon a 3-0 lead when she drilled a free kick from 50 yards out to the top center of the goal. Less than five minutes later the Fighting Scots rounded out the scoring when sophomore Kendra Woudenberg (Whitinsville, Mass.) fed a long pass to classmate Jane Dietrich (West Hartford, Conn.), who put a shot to the right side.
Sophomore Kari Christensen (Standish, Maine) made five saves to record her fourth shutout of the season. Wentworth junior Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass,) turned back 13 shots for the Leopards, who were outshot 27-13.
With the win the Fighting Scots improve to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in CCC play. Gordon hosts the University of New England on Tuesday. Wentworth falls to 2-8 (0-4) and hosts UMass Boston in a non-league tilt Monday night.
