Women's Soccer Shutout at Framingham State

Women's Soccer Shutout at Framingham State

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Sophomore Marissa D'Angelo (Whitman, Mass.) tallied a career-high four goals as the Framingham State University women's soccer team defeated Wentworth 8-0 this afternoon in  non-conference women's soccer action at Maple Street Field.

With the win, the Rams improve to 7-5-1 on the season, while the Leopards fall to 3-11.

Freshman Elizabeth Juneau (Auburn, Mass.) scored the game-winner for the Rams just 6:32 into the contest when sophomore Kayla Austin (Winchester, Mass.) lofted a corner kick into the box that Juneau redirected into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.

The Leopards had a chance to even the score two minutes later after a defensive misplay by the Rams in front of their own net gave the Leopards possession in the box, but play was negated due to an offsides call.

D'Angelo extended the Rams lead to 2-0 in the 17th minute with her first of the game as she took a pass on the left sideline and dribbled free towards the goal.  D'Angelo beat the WIT keeper with a shot in the bottom corner just inside the post.

Freshman Isabela DeSouza (Framingham, Mass.) added her team leading 10th goal in the 21st minute when she headed in a Christina Buonopane (Stoneham, Mass.) cross and D'Angelo added her second of the game in the 26th minute off a Marisa Parent (Revere, Mass.) assist to extend the Rams lead to 4-0.

D'Angelo added her third of the game in the 47th minute to record the hat trick and her 4th in the 64th minute off another Parent assist.  Sandwiched between the two D'Angelo goals Parent scored her 7th of the season off Austin's second assist of the game.  Freshman Melissa Higgins (Waltham, Mass.) added an unassisted goal in the 67th minute to reach the final margin.

Freshman McKenzie Verschon (Chicopee, Mass.) made seven saves for the Rams and recorded her 3rd shutout of the season.  Junior Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass) made 14 stops for the Leopards before giving way to Nicole Leahey (Warwick, R.I.) who made five stops.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to MASCAC foe Bridgewater State at 4 p.m., while the Leopards host Curry at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
