Nichols Defeats Women's Soccer

DUDLEY, Mass. – Freshman Bryanna Goodine (Dracut, Mass.) scored the lone tally of the match to lift Nichols past visiting Wentworth in a Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer contest on Saturday at Michael J. Vendetti Field.

The first half would end in a 0-0 stalemate as the Bison outshot the Leopards 10-5 while Wentworth held a 2-1 margin on corner kicks. The visitors also made six stops to Nichols two.  The hosts were led by first-year Alyssa Tosti (Douglas, Mass.) who took took aim at the goal twice. Rookie Alexandrea Banks (Ellington, Conn.) and classmate Maddy Lanoue (Pittsfield, Mass.) tested Nichols junior netminder Maureen Lynch (Holbrook, Mass.) with a shot each.

Nichols broke through on a loose ball with the keeper out of position of the foot of Goodine in the 70th minute. Wentworth's best shot came in the 81st minute when senior Lucy Brown (Plainville, Conn.) fired a shot but the ball was scooped up by Lynch. Each team would take a corner kick in the stanza while the hosts held a slight 6-4 edge on shots.
Lynch picks up her second shutout of the week as she made five stops.

Wentworth's junior goalkeeper Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) amassed seven saves in the near-complete game effort. Nicole Leahey finished the contest without a shot coming her way.

Nichols (3-5-0, 1-2-0) plays the middle contest of a three-match homestand on Thursday when Fitchburg arrives on Dudley Hill for a 4:00 p.m. tilt. Wentworth (2-6-0, 0-3-0) returns to Worcester County on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. match at WPI.
