Montville, Barilone Tally in Women's Soccer's Triumph over Endicott

BEVERLY, Mass. – Three goals in a span of just over three minutes proved to be the difference as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team grabbed a 3-2 victory over the Endicott Gulls in Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday afternoon.

The win locks up a CCC Tournament berth for the Black & Gold as they defeated a Gull sqaud who was regionally ranked in the first set of NCAA Division III regional rankings, released earlier this week.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A quiet start to the contest that resulted in limited offense escalated quickly when sophomore Jenny Montville (Plainville, Mass.) managed to find the twine off of a feed from senior Madison Wolf (Falmouth, Maine) at the 8:07 mark.
  • Less than a minute later, freshman Meghan Barilone (Bennington, Vt.) nicked a shot past the Gulls' goalkeeper off of a pass up field by freshman Jordan Dahan (Kennesaw, Ga.), startling the Gulls and putting the Leopards up 2-0.
  • At the 11:30 mark, Montville found herself with an opportunity to extend the lead and executed on it, putting Wentworth ahead 3-0.
  • About five minutes later, Endicott's offense ignited and begun putting everything and anything to the net. Leopards' sophomore goalkeeper Juliana Heaton (Swansea, Mass.) saw a variety of shots in a short span of time and deflected everything away.
  • By the end of the offensive spurt for the Gulls, senior Julias Matus (East Greenwich, R.I.) beat Heaton, cutting the score to 3-1 at the 24:32 mark.
  • At the 36:31 mark, Wentworth's defensive structure stood tall to make a team save.
  • Matus was awarded a penalty kick at the 62:10 mark and ultimately beat Heaton for her sixth goal of the season, slicing the deficit in half to a 3-2 score.
  • A flurry of shots by the Gulls kept Wentworth on their heels as Endicott tried to battle back to tie the CCC game. One final shot for the Gulls at the 89:15 mark was saved by Heaton, giving Wentworth the 3-2 victory.

THE SERIES:

  • This was the 31st meeting between the two teams. Endicott owns the all-time series, 23-7-1.
