SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Three different players scored second-half goals as the top-seeded Western New England women's soccer team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-0, in a quarterfinal round game of the 2022 Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Western New England had its first chance of the game in the fifth and sixth minute, with a shot that went wide to the left and another that was saved by sophomore Juliana Heaton (Swansea, Mass.).
  • Wentworth graduate student Diana Bruggeman (Natick, Mass.) gave the Leopards their first chance when she put a shot on net in the 14th minute. Sophomore Jenny Montville (Plainville, Mass.) had three shots, including one on net in the 25th minute.
  • Heaton came up with a save in the 42nd minute of play and, with just under a minute left, the Golden Bears put a shot off the crossbar, keeping it scoreless after 45 minutes.
  • Western New England had a pair of corner kicks early in the second half but were unable to generate any scoring chances. The Golden Bears countered with a pair of shots wide in the 52nd and 53rd minutes. The Golden Bears broke through at the 57:58 mark when senior Summer Hathaway (Colchester, Vt.) scored after a pass from senior Danielle McCarthy (Old Lyme, Conn.). At the 61:12 mark, the hosts struck again as graduate student Samantha Vitka (Stratford, Conn.) scored off a feed from junior Isabella Montalvo (Rocky Hill, Conn.).
  • In the 66th minute, junior Lauren Bradley (Lumberton, N.J.) put a shot on net, which was saved by junior Molly McLaughlin (Guilford, Conn.).
  • With 9:49 left, McCarthy sent a short corner kick to graduate student Allison Bruehwiler (Old Saybrook, Conn.), who put a long shot to the upper right corner.
  • Heaton made five saves in the first 61:12. Junior Adrianna Arona (Westfield, Mass.) made one over the final 21:12. Western New England had a 24-6 shot advantage and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

THE SERIES:

  • Today 18th all-time meeting between the two teams. Western New England leads 10-7-1. The Golden Bears have won the last three meetings and are 5-0-1 in the last six.
