Leopards Drop Pair at Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Wentworth women's volleyball team concluded play at the 2009 Brandeis Invitational by suffering a pair of losses as the Leopards fell to Gordon, 3-1, and Rhode Island College, 3-0.

 

Against conference rival Gordon, the Leopards were dropped by the Fighting Scots, 25-21, in the first set and Gordon took a 2-0 lead with a 25-12 win in the second set.  Looking to extend the match Wentworth had its best hitting set of the match (.167) in the third set and cut the lead to 2-1 with a 25-17 win.  However, Gordon would close out the match in the fourth set with a 25-19 win.

 

Freshman Julie Rahilly (Nashua, N.H.) had nine kills and 11 digs, while sophomore Julie Bruton (Montgomery, Texas) had eight kills, seven aces, and 13 digs.  Senior Courtney Zink (East Falmouth, Mass.) had 21 assists.  As a team Wentworth committed 20 reception errors.

 

The Leopards fell to the Anchorwomen by a 3-0 final, dropping the first set, 25-12, and playing RIC close in the second before falling, 25-22.  The match would end in the third set with Rhode Island College taking a 25-18 win.  Junior Jen Giudice (Central Valley, N.Y.) had nine kills for Wentworth, while Bruton, who was named to her second straight all-tournament team, had 12 digs.  Rahilly and freshman Nicole Wetherbee (Pembroke, Mass.) each had 10 digs.
