NEWTON, Mass. – After suffering a 3-0 setback to the University of Massachusetts Boston on Saturday morning, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team got back on the winning track Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Lasell in non-conference action played at Taylor Field.
With the win the Leopards improve to 2-1 on the season while the Lasers fall to 0-2.
The first half saw Lasell have a pair of chances early on, however Wentworth held a 13-2 shot advantage. The Leopards' best chances came in the 38th minutes when they had three shots in a span of 38 seconds, however were unable to capitalize.
Despite the lopsided shot total after 45 minutes of play, the hosts came out and nearly scored on a shot from sophomore Kenan Omerbasic (Windsor, Conn.), however sophomore Joe Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) came up with the save to keep the contest scoreless.
Wentworth broke the ice at the 63:30 mark when junior Emmett Basaca (San Diego, Calif.) capitalized on a loose ball in the box and fired a strike past freshman Jackson Burhans (Berlin, N.Y.). While the Lasers managed back-to-back shots shortly after the goal was scored, Schallmo denied both bids.
The Leopards added an insurance goal with four minutes remaining in the contest as junior Matt Cicalis (Bridgewater, Mass.) took a shot which was saved by Burhans. The rebound came out to junior Stephen Frazier (Bedford, Mass.) who buried his attempt home.
Schallmo turned aside seven shots to pick up the win. Cugno made five saves in the first have while Burhans was saddled with the loss after making six saves in the second half. Wentworth held a 25-12 shot advantage and and 8-4 edge on corner kicks.
The Leopards host Mass. Maritime on Wednesday night.
