Men's Tennis Edged by Bridgewater State in Back-and-Forth Contest

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior Cameron Doherty (Milford, Mass.) snapped a 4-all tie with his three-set win at No. 6 singles as the Bridgewater State University men's tennis team (2-0) rallied past Wentworth Institute of Technology (1-4), 5-4, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Bridgewater State took a 1-0 lead when seniors Jeff Pavao (Somerset, Mass.) and Colin Lamusta (Lynnfield, Mass.) picked up an 8-4 win at No. 1 over senior Kevin Salomon (West Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Daniel Gallegos (Monterrey, Mexico). The Bears upped their lead to 2-0 at No. 3 as Doherty and junior Robert Dwyer (Yarmouth Port, Mass.) defeated senior Sam Ferro (Hanson, Mass.) and junior Owen Conlon (Cataumet, Mass.), 8-6.
  • Wentworth picked up a point and cut the lead to 2-1 with a win at No. 2 as freshman Pranav Marwaha (Nashua, N.H.) and graduate student Harrison Maki (Rutland, Mass.) downed senior Kendan Ziegler (Hadley, N.Y.) and senior Sean Nutter (Mattapoisett, Mass.), 8-7 (7-5).
  • The Leopards tied the match when Gallegos defeated Lamusta at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3, and took a 3-2 lead when Salomon defeated Pavao at No. 1, 6-3, 6-2. Nutter tied the match for the hosts when he defeated Maki, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3
  • Junior Malo Legouin (Nanterre, France) put the Black & Gold on the verge of clinching when he defeated Dwyer at No. 5, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. However, Bridgewater State tied the match at 4-all when Ziegler rallied to defeat Marwaha at No. 3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-1.
  • Doherty defeated Ferro in the first set at No. 6, 6-0, before Ferro came back to tie the match with a 7-5 win. Bridgewater State prevailed when Doherty picked up a 6-3 win in the third set.
