Men's Tennis Downs Gordon to Advance in CCC Tournament

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Senior Sam Ferro (Whitman, Mass.) picked up a straight-set win at No. 6 singles to clinch the match as the fourth-seeded Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team defeated fifth-seeded Gordon Saturday afternoon at the Daly Field Courts in the opening round of the 2022 CCC Tournament.

With the win the Leopards improve to 7-8 and will advance to face top-seeded Nichols in one semifinal on Wednesday afternoon. The Fighting Scots see their season come to an end with a 6-8 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Gordon picked up the first point of the match, coming at No. 3 doubles as freshmen Nathan Gonzalez (Pawcatuck, Conn.) and Adrian Thomas (Arlington, Mass.) picked up an 8-2 win over Ferro and junior Malo Legouin (Nanterre, France). Wentworth tied the match when sophomore Daniel Gallegos and senior Kevin Salomon (West Newton, Mass.) were 8-4 winners at No. 1 over sophomore Ezekial Hall (Sugarlan, Texas) and junior Mark Noschese (Wayne, N.J.). The Leopards took a 2-1 lead after freshman Pranav Marwaha (Nashua, N.H.) teamed with graduate student Harrison Maki (Rutland, Mass.) for an 8-5 win over junior John Marineau (Auburn, N.H.) and junior Alez Ryzi (Littleton, Mass.) at No. 2.
  • Gallegos put the hosts in front, 3-1, with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Marineau at No. 2 singles before Hall was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Salomon at No. 1 to pull Gordon back within one.
  • Marwaha put the Black & Gold on the verge of clinching with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Noschese at No. 3. Ferro won the first set at No. 6 over Thomas, 7-5, before putting Wentworth in the semifinals with a 6-2 win in the second set.
  • Each team was ahead in the two unfinished matches. At No. 4, Maki led Ryzi, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0, while, at No. 5, Gonzalez was ahead, 6-3, 5-4, over Legouin.
