Men's Tennis Doubled up at Salem State

SALEM, Mass. – After taking a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play, the Salem State University men's tennis team (2-4) defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology (4-5), 6-3, in non-conference action Monday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Graduate student Andrew Muttiah (Colombo, Sri Lanka) and junior Cory Cherico (Winthrop, Mass.) gave the hosts a 1-0 lead as they teamed up to defeat Wentworth graduate student Harrison Maki (Rutland, Mass.) and freshman Pranav Marwaha (Nashia, N.H.), 8-2, at No. 2. The Vikings took a 2-0 lead when sophomore Parker Andreoli (Windham, N.H.) and senior Giacomo Graziani (East Boston, Mass.) defeated junior Malo Legouin (Nanterre, France) and senior Sam Ferro (Whitman, Mass.) at No. 3, 8-6. The Leopards claimed an 8-6 win at No. 1 when senior Kevin Salomon (West Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Daniel Gallegos (Monterrey, Mexico) defeated senior Grant Bellino (Amesbury, Mass.) and senior Roni Bazile (Brockton, Mass.), 8-6.
  • Cherico gave the Viking a 3-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Maki at No. 4 before Gallegos pulled the Black & Gold back within one with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bellino at No. 2. Muttiah defeated Salomon, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 1 to put Salem State on the verge of clinching and Bazile provided the match-clinching point with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Marwaha at No. 3.
  • Wentworth's third point of the match came when Legouin defeated Andreoli, 7-5, 6-3 before freshman Adam Stanneck (Washington, N.J.) defeated Ferro, 2-6, 6-3, 10-6, at No. 6
