Men's Tennis Doubles up Curry; Clinches Home Playoff Match

MILTON, Mass. – After falling behind, 2-1, at the conclusion of doubles play, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team picked up five points in singles play and rallied to defeat the Colonels, 6-3, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Winners of two straight, the Leopards improve to 6-7 overall and 5-2 in CCC play. The Black & Gold can finish no lower than fourth in the standings and are guaranteed a home playoff match for the first round for the second straight season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Curry took a 1-0 lead in doubles play with an 8-4 win at No. 3 as junior Devon Richards (Berlin, Conn.) and junior Grant Palmer (Charlotte, N.C.) teamed up to defeat freshman Justin Whalen (Weymouth, Mass.) and junior Denis Minevich (Natick, Mass.). Wentworth tied the match with an 8-3 win at No. 2 when sophomore Daniel Gallegos (Monterrey, Mexico and junior Malo Legouin (Nanterre, France) downed junior Kevin Meade (Milton, Mass.) and senior Tim O'Brien (Attleboro, Mass.). The Colonels took the slim lead after doubles play when senior Lorenzo Russo (Lynnfield, Mass.) and senior David Monteiro (Fall River, Mass.) were an 8-3 winner over graduate student Harrison Maki (Rutland, Mass.) and freshman Pranav Marwaha (Nashua, N.H.)
  • Gallegos evened the score at 2-all when he defeated Meade at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, before Marwaha gave Wentworth a 3-2 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3. Junioe Owen Conlon (Cataumet, Mass.) was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at No. 5 to push the Black & Gold on the brink of winning before junior Adian Gordon's 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Richards gave Wentworth the win.
  • Maki defeated Montieor, 6-6, 6-2, at No. 4 while Curry clinched the final point of the match with Russo's 6-4, 1-6, 10-6 win over senior Kevin Salomon (West Newton, Mass.) at No. 1
