Men's Tennis Cruises Past Suffolk for Third Straight Win

WESTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team had four student-athletes win at both singles and doubles as the Leopards evened its record at 4-4 and remained undefeated in Commonwealth Coast Conference play (2-0) with a 7-2 win over Suffolk (1-4, 1-2) Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth got off to a fast start, winning all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead, a lead the Black & Gold would not relinquish. Graduate student Harrison Maki (Rutland, Mass.) and freshman Pranav Marwaha (Nashua, N.H.) got things started with an 8-0 win at No. 2 over junior Dylan Katz (Lincoln, R.I.) and sophomore Matthew Gallego (Revere, Mass.). Senior Kevin Salomon (West Newton, Mass.) teamed with sophomore Daniel Gallegos (Monterrey, Mexico) to pick up an 8-4 win at No. 1 over senior Hasan Esrawi (Braintree, Mass.) and sophomore Juan Velasquez (Boston, Mass.). Junior Kevin Shields (East Longmeadow, Mass.) teamed with senior Sam Ferro (Whitman, Mass.) to defeat senior Ben Bricker (Los Angeles, Calif.) and senior Haik Semerdjian (Farmington, Conn), 9-7.
  • Salomon gave the Leopards a 4-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Esrawi at No. 1, while, on the court adjacent to that match, Gallegos clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Katz at No.2.
  • Ferro made the score 6-0 when he defeated Gallego, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5. Suffolk got its first point of the match at No. 6 when Bricker defeated junior Owen Conlon (Cataument, Mass.), 6-2, 6-4.
  • Maki won his first set against junior Diego Herandez-Pons (Mexico City, Mexico), 6-2, before battling back to win the second set, 7-6 (7-4). Velasquez defeated junior Malo Legouin (Nanterre, France) at No. 5, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).
