Men's Tennis Rallies Past Gordon in CCC Opener

WENHAM, Mass. – Junior Malo Legouin (Nanterre, France) won at No. 5 singles as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team rallied to defeat Gordon, 5-4, in the Commonwealth Conference opener for both squads.

With the win the Leopards snap a four-match losing streak, improving to 2-4 (1-0) while the Fighting Scots fall to 2-5 (0-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Gordon took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, winning at No. 3 and No. 1. At No. 3, freshmen Nathan Gonzalez (Pawcatuck, Conn.) and Adrian Thomas (Arlington, Mass.) defeated junior Kevin Shields (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Legouin, 8-4. At No. 1, sophomore Ezekial Hall (Sugarland, Texas) teamed with junior Mark Noschese (Wayne, N.J.) to pick up an 8-6 win over senior Kevin Salomon (West Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Daniel Gallegos (Monterrey, Mexico). The Leopards' lone doubles point came at No. 2 when freshman Pranav Marwaha (Nashua, N.H.) and graduate student Harrison Maki (Rutland, Mass.) defeated juniors John Marineau (Auburn, N.H.) and Alex Ryzi, 8-5.
  • The Fighting Scots upped their lead to 3-1 after Hall defeated Salomon, 6-0, 6-2, however, Gallegos picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 and senior Sam Ferro (Whitman, Mass.) defeated Thomas, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 to even the match at 3-all.
  • Nochese bested Marwaha, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3, putting Gordon on the brink to clinching the match with a 4-3 lead. Maki tied the match at 4-all with a 5-7. 6-2, 6-1 over Ryzi, setting the stage for the No. 5 match to decide the match. Legouin won the first set, 6-3, but Gonzalez came back to tie the match with a 7-5 win. In the winner take all third set, Legouin emerged victorious with a 6-1 win.
