Briggs Elevated to Head Men's & Women's Tennis Coach

BOSTON, Mass. – After spending four seasons as a tennis student-athlete and the last three seasons as Wentworth Institute of Technology's Assistant Men's and Women's Tennis Coach, Caitlyn Briggs '18 has been elevated to the position of head coach, effective immediately. Briggs replaces JC Cangelosi, who stepped down after three seasons guiding the Leopards. Director of Athletics Cheryl Aaron made the announcement.

"We are sorry to see JC leave Wentworth as he's been a tremendous leader of our tennis programs and a truly valued member of the Wentworth community during his time at Wentworth," said Aaron. "At the same time, however, we are excited that Caitlyn has decided to step into the role of head coach. Caitlyn was a successful member of the women's tennis program during her four years at Wentworth, has been a tremendous asset serving as an assistant coach, and now we welcome her into the head coaching role."

A native of Lee, Mass., Briggs competed in singles and doubles for the Leopards, playing at No. 1 singles as a sophomore and junior and competing at No. 1 doubles in 42 of the 56 matches in which she competed in throughout her career. During her freshman campaign, she earned Honorable Mention All-Commonwealth Coast Conference honors in doubles play. Her 20 career singles wins tie her for fifth on Wentworth's all-time list, while she is tied for 13th all-time on the program's career doubles win list.

"It's an honor to be able to work with such incredible student-athletes and I am looking forward to continuing to build the program that I have been a part of for seven years," said Briggs. "I loved being a part of the team as a student-athlete and an assistant coach and now I can't wait to try this head coach thing out."

Cangelosi began his tenure on Huntington Avenue during the 2017-18 season, serving as an assistant coach for both programs, before being elevated to head coach after one season. The 2019-20 edition of the women's program won more matches than the previous two seasons combined and he coached four All-CCC selections, including Ali Sollecito '21, who earned her fourth straight singles nod this past season and teamed with Morgan Collins '23 to be named all-conference in doubles play. On the men's side, Cangelosi picked up 15 wins over three seasons, including going 7-4 this past season, which were the most wins since the 2005-06 campaign. In addition to the 7-4 mark, he guided the Black & Gold to its first-ever appearance in the CCC championship match. Three student-athletes earned a total of five All-CCC honors with Tyler Hall '21 earning all-conference honors in singles play and Daniel Gallegos '24 and Kevin Salomon '22 earning All-CCC honors in both singles and doubles play.

"I am so grateful for the opportunity I had coaching at Wentworth," said Cangelosi. "It was a fantastic experience and I feel fortunate to have met so many wonderful people. I wish all the best for both programs."
