Men's Tennis Cruises Past Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Building on a 2-1 lead after doubles play, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team won five of six singles matches to pick up a 7-2 win over Western New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Wednesday afternoon.

With the win the Leopards improve to 5-7 overall and 4-2 in CCC play while the Golden Bears drop to 5-4 (2-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Western New England took a 1-0 lead after senior Max Gordan (Middleton, Mass.) and freshman Nick Bayer (Bedford, N.H.) teamed up at No. 1 doubles for an 8-4 win over senior Kevin Salomon (West Newton, Mass.) and freshman Pranav Marwaha (Nashua, N.H.). Wentworth tied the match at 1-all when sophomore Daniel Gallegos (Monterrey, Mexico) and junior Malo Legouin (Nanterre, France) defeated junior Michael Robichaud (Auburn, Mass.) and senior Casey VanDenBossche (West Gardiner, Maine), 8-4, at No.2. The Leopards took a 2-1 lead after graduate student Harrison Maki (Rutland, Mass.) teamed with senior Sam Ferro (Whitman, Mass.) for an 8-5 win over junior Paul Riccio (Branford, Conn.) and freshman Brandon Greger (Bristol, Conn.) at No. 3.
  • Ferro defeated Riccio, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 to give the Black & Gold a 4-1 lead before Marwaha clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-5 win over junior Sebastian Smreczak (Auburn, Maine) at No. 3.
  • Robichaud won the Golden Bears' lone point in singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Maki at No. 4. Gallegos was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Gordan at No. 2, Salomon picked up a 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 win over Bayer at No. 1, and Legouin was a 6-4, 7-5 winner at No. 5.
