Gosselin's Late Goal Lifts Men's Soccer Past Nichols

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Nathan Gosselin's (Hudson, N.H.) goal with 7:29 left in regulation snapped a scoreless tie and lifted the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Nichols in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth had its first chance in the 14th minute when a foul led to a direct kick at the top of the box. Senior Alex Moore (Salem, Conn.) had his bid blocked by the Nichols defense. Five minutes later, senior Jomar Martins (Braintree, Mass.) had a shot attempt saved by freshman Luke Speers (Collegeville, Pa.).
  • A corner kick in the 25th minute by senior John Dauphin (Yorba Linda, Calif.) was sent into the box. Classmate Erik Treble (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) got a head on the ball, however, it nicked the crossbar and went out of bounds.
  • The Bison put their first shot attempt on net in the 52nd minute when junior Nicholas McGrath (Northborough, Mass.) had a chance in front, which was saved by senior Robbie West (Weymouth, Mass.).
  • Gosselin had a shot attempt blocked out of bounds in the 74th minute, which resulted in a corner kick for the Black & Gold. However, the hosts were unable to generate a scoring chance.
  • In the 82nd minute, Nichols had a corner kick. Freshman Braeden LeClair (Cumberland, R.I.) served a ball towards the box, however, freshman Nathan Salamon's (West Springfield, Mass.) attempt sailed over the net.
  • On the ensuing possession, Dauphin sent a pass from inside midfield toward Gosselin at the top left of the box. Gosselin sent a shot from up top past Speers for his team-leading eighth marker of the season.
  • The Bison had three consecutive shot attempts in the 87th minute, with West coming up with a save after the first two were blocked and hit the crossbar.
  • West finished with three saves in the win, while Speers had four stops.

THE SERIES:

  • Today marked the 37th meeting between the two teams. Wentworth snapped a two-game series losing streak and leads all-time, 23-14.
